A Country of Many Places
Russia consists of many regions, republics and areas. A region is part of a country with its own character, nature and culture. A capital is the main city of a country or an area. A landmark is a famous place or building that people recognise. Sights are interesting things visitors can see, and a place of interest is somewhere worth visiting. To be famous for means to be widely known because of something.
Moscow is the capital of Russia. This ancient city is famous for the Kremlin, Red Square, St Basil's Cathedral and the Bolshoi Theatre. Saint Petersburg is often called the cultural capital and is known for palaces, canals and museums, including the Hermitage.
