An outstanding athlete is described through both achievements and personal qualities. Achievements such as winning a title or an Olympic event are checkable facts; qualities such as determination or sportsmanship must be supported by actions in the text.
A complete language profile includes active achievement-and-admiration vocabulary, comprehension of a self-contained biography, an oral summary and a structured written biography.
The reading below uses three separately attributed historical sources: Olympic material for the Rome 1960 results, Tennessee State University for education and childhood illness, and Smithsonian material for later teaching, coaching and youth work.
