A short talk
Emma: What is your favourite animal story?
Dan: How the Camel Got His Hump, by Rudyard Kipling.
Emma: Did you read it last week?
Dan: Yes, I did. I liked the animals.
Emma: Did the camel help them?
Dan: No, he didn’t. That was the problem!
The camel and the work
A new short retelling of Rudyard Kipling’s story.
Long ago, a camel lived in a desert. A horse, a dog and an ox worked for a man. The camel did not help. He ate plants and rested.
The horse came to the camel. The dog and the ox came, too. They wanted his help. The camel only said, “Humph!” The three animals went to the man. They told him about the camel. The man said that they had to do more work. They were angry.
Then a Djinn came. The animals told him their problem. He went into the desert and found the camel. The Djinn told him to work. Again, the camel said, “Humph!”
The Djinn used magic. The camel looked at his back and saw a big hump. Now he could work for three days without food. The camel got his hump because he did not do his share of the work. He still had to help the other animals.
